Creating an Experience: Jimmy Connor

Jimmy Connor

Lead Water Quality Technician

Memphis Zoo

Jimmy has been a dedicated team member at the Memphis Zoo since 2008, currently working in the water quality department. In addition to making sure that each individual animal’s water needs are met, Jimmy ensures that the fountains, the splash park, and other water sources are ready for the long, hot day ahead.

Meet our 2023 Pick Awards Winner for Attractions, Jimmy Connor!

Why did you want to get into the hospitality industry?

It actually happened as a fluke. I used to be an assistant for a home builder here in town. When I graduated college, the housing market crashed. Without me knowing it, my mom applied for me to work at the zoo in the horticulture department. I received a phone call from the Memphis Zoo asking me if I would like to come in and interview for the job. And I was like, sure. I've been there ever since.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a baseball player. I played baseball in high school and  in college and I played some semi-pro, but then I got hurt and I had to join the real world.

What's your favorite part about your job?

My favorite part is interacting with the keepers. Once you get to know the keepers, then they will let you have experiences behind the scenes that the general public can't see.

What's your favorite part about working in hospitality in general?

Probably just seeing the looks on the faces of the people when they come to the zoo and they have an enjoyable visit. When the water's clear and they get to see the polar bears or the hippos or the sea lions, I know that what I do during the day allows our visitors to have a better day. I love that.

What are your top three places to visit in Memphis?

The Memphis Zoo would be number one. Absolutely. The Bass Pro shop in the pyramid. And MoSH.

What is something that you've learned in your position that has changed your life for the better?

Probably how to deal with people on a daily basis. You don't know what someone's going through during the day. Working with the general public has enabled me to stop and take time to see if people need anything – or just to ask them if they're having a good day.

Thank you, Jimmy, for caring for visitors to the zoo – and for the animals they come to see!
