Brightening Someone’s Day: Melvia Hawkins

Melvia Hawkins

Holiday Inn - University Memphis

In her three years at the Holiday Inn - University of Memphis, Melvia has had countless opportunities to change the course of a guest’s day for the better. One of her nominators wrote about coming to Memphis to see her granddaughter perform at the Southern Heritage Classic: “When I arrived, Melvia was super busy, with a line out the door. When it was my turn, Melvia told me I had booked my reservation for the wrong Holiday Inn location. I felt discombobulated from traveling and from hearing this bad news, and Melvia told me to have a seat and assured me she would work it out for me. She called the other hotel to make sure I wouldn’t be charged and allowed me to freshen up in a room and store my luggage in her office until a room became available. After returning from the game, my room was ready, with my luggage already inside. If that ain't southern hospitality, I don't know what is. Melvia did not have to do that for me but she went out of her way to help a little old lady like myself. Melvia needs to be recognized for her hospitality. She is the best.”

Melvia’s commitment to going the extra mile made her a perfect candidate for the second of our 2024 Quarterly Pick Awards!

What’s it like to be able to turn someone’s day around for the better?

When I walk through the door, I choose to make every experience a great experience. You never know a person's story when they enter that door. So you begin to give everyone compassion and empathy.

For anyone who is new to the hospitality industry, what advice would you give to them?

Just smile. Smiles are contagious. When your guest arrives, you never know what type of day they’re having.

Where do you like to go in your free time?

So I am now in my early 60s, and I’ve got six grandkids. So we do a whole lot. There are just so many great places to get out and enjoy.

Thank you, Melvia, for brightening our day!
