2025 First Quarterly Pick Awards - Hotel Honoree: Alexandra Welch

Alexandra Welch

Holiday Inn–University of Memphis

As a Front Desk Service Agent, Alexandra does a phenomenal job of welcoming every guest to Holiday Inn-University of Memphis. One of her nominations relates a special experience with a couple who stayed for a week: “She always welcomed them in and out of the hotel. They never came to the desk. They never asked for any needs. They never raised any concerns. To be honest, they never even really acknowledged Alexandra when she welcomed them. However, on their last day, the couple presented Alexandra with a token of appreciation. They were in town from a funeral, and appreciated her joyful and helpful attitude during a time of stress and loss; they wanted us to know the impact that she had on them each day.”

How long have you been working in the hospitality industry?

I graduated from the University of Memphis in March of 2020 with a major in Hospitality, and I’ve previously worked at the front desk of a medical center. I’ve been in my current position for about five months.

Why did you get into the hospitality industry?

I’ve always been a people person. I’m an introvert, but when I'm at work, I just kind of turn it on!. Every day is different and brings an opportunity to meet the most amazing people and hear their stories. I love asking guests what they did when they're in town, and finding out what they liked.

What is one of your favorite memories from working in this position?

There have been a couple times where guests have had very specific requests and I was able to figure it out for them. I feel like I’m able to make a difference. Anytime a guest tells me I’ve done a good job or helped make them feel comfortable stands out, too. I also love all the events we have here. Working here has allowed me to meet a lot of interesting people.

What are your top three favorite places to visit?

The Memphis Zoo, Central BBQ, and Shelby Farms Park.

What is something that you have learned in this position that has changed your life for the better?

My managers have been in this work much longer than me, so it’s nice to hear their experiences, their advice, and to learn from what they would do differently. One thing I’ve definitely learned is patience.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in the hospitality industry?

Do your research and try different things to see what you like. In school, I learned there are so many branches of hospitality work: hotels, restaurants, human resources, cruise ships, theme parks. So there are a lot of options; you can try things out to see what fits.

Alexandra impressed her nominators - and us! - with her dedication to exceptional service and her eagerness to learn and grow. She was an obvious choice for the First Quarterly Pick Awards of 2025!
